Most art depicts the spring thaw as a singular scene of beauty, when the truth is often much messier, both figuratively and literally.
Thaw is about the transformation from winter to spring. For those us who reside in the very cold upper Midwest, this can take place over weeks, or even months. A sunny day in early March can give the impression of the coming spring, only to be frozen again the next day. When the temperature finally moves above freezing, the thaw is actually quite messy, snow melts and turns the ground into thick pools of mud, making you wish that snow would return.
As I completed this work, it seemed as if its Spring had arrived, only for winter to return in a three day winter storm over Easter weekend. However, the forecast still looks like the blooms will be arriving shortly.
