In 2023, the Smithsonian National Zoo returned their three giant pandas to their Chinese homeland. This ended a fifty-year agreement between the United States and China.
When I first read this, I thought of the sadness of losing not only these magnificent beings, but also the sadness of the change in the relationship between the two countries. The pandas served as a symbol, and their return indicated the current uneasiness between the two parties.
In my adulthood, I have frequently moved. I treasure the friendships I have made at each stop, but each time I have moved, I have always wondered which of these friendships will endure.
